Mount Dromedary

Monday 13th June 2016

We went for a hike up to Mount Dromedary today. The outward leg was via the normal route and then up the west face which was a little slippery in places due to the wet rocks. Up at the trig marker on the summit it was blowing a gale and it was trying to blow us off our feet. We did not waste too much time here and headed over to the eastern lookout for lunch in a somewhat more  sheltered spot. I decided to head back down the southern track because it provides a much more gentle slope with less likelihood of accidents. This proved to be a good idea. Once we reached the old road we headed back to the car via the track that runs to the western side of Little Marsh. I always like to walk this section because it has a nice feel about it. The creek that drains the Marsh was running really well.
This a really good walk with 360 degree views from the summit. I did not take many photos as there are plenty in previous posts.

Mount Dromedary

Saturday 11th October 2014

I had previously walked to Mount Dromedary a couple of years ago, and on that occasion had walked up to the peak on the western approach. See Here. This time we decided to find the track that went up from the south.
The walk starts at the end of Braslins Road in the Magra/Black Hills area. There is a small parking area here.
We walked up the road and around the locked gate and gradually climbed uphill to the junction -  Platform Peak left and Mount Dromedary right. We turned right and walked around the north side of Little Marsh. The track was a little wet in places but nothing major. There was lots of evidence of timber cutting in the area and many living trees had been felled and just left there. There was also heaps of rubbish beside the track which was most disappointing.

When we reached the start of the western track, it was very hard to discern as the markers had been removed. We carried on along the road in a southerly direction until we reached the point where the track should have been. We did find it but there were no tapes for quite a while so I suspect that they had been removed also. For what reason, I do not know. The track was generally easy to follow and was not overly steep and we reached the eastern lookout after about an hour of climbing. I had not been to this lookout before and I think it provides better scenery than the actual summit. After soaking in the views we took the short walk to the summit where we had lunch.

After a good break we walked back down the way we had ascended and walked around the southern side of Little Marsh back to the car.

This is an enjoyable walk with great scenery at the top of the mount. We walked at quite a leisurely pace today so the walk could obviously be completed much faster.

Mount Dromedary

Mount Dromedary Summit
The aim of today's walk was to climb Mount Dromedary and then go on and do Platform Peak as well. All did not go to plan as I ran out of time in the end because I had to be home by a certain time.
To reach the start of the walk drive out to New Norfolk and turn right over the bridge towards Black Hills and finally turn right into Braslins Road and drive to the end.
I started walking about 0830 and walked around the locked gate and uphill on a good forestry track. It was wet in places with flowing water, but nothing serious and after 30 minutes I came to a junction. I kept heading in an easterly direction before coming to another junction which I noted as I was coming back this way. I carried on straight ahead and after a while the track started heading south.
Along the track to Mount Dromedary
Soon I passed the junction with the track that I was going to return on and kept going south to find the marked track to the summit. The track was easy to follow and after about 50 minutes of climbing I reached the top. There were good views here.
From Mount Dromedary
As I wanted to go to Platform Peak as well, I didn't waste too much time here and climbed back down to the road track and turned left onto the track I had previously seen. This track went down to Little Marsh and paralleled the western side of it. It was quite pleasant walking in this area. After crossing a small creek the track went back uphill to meet the outgoing track. I walked back to the first junction and walked along the track in a northerly direction towards Platform Peak. I did not know were I was really going, only that I had a track on the map in my GPS that went to the summit. This proved to be totally inaccurate in the end. Anyway I came to a good road which was heading in the right direction and then turned left onto another track and searched for the ascent track. I could not find it so I retraced and found another track and at the end some tapes. I followed these but it was not a defined track and I was running out of time, so decided to abandon my attempt and walked back to the car.
This was a good walk with good views and even though I did not get to Platform Peak I enjoyed it.
Note: I have since learned where the track is and have done Platform Peak. If I had kept going along the taped trail for another 30 metres, I would have come across the track!!
