Trestle Mountain

Saturday 15th July 2017

Trestle Mountain
Today's walk was to Trestle Mountain. The route taken this time was up from Myrtle Forest to Collins Cap Trail, along to East West Trail and then up to the summit and return the same way. The fire trails were icy, as was the ascent of the mountain, but the weather was almost perfect. The temperature ranged between 2 and 5 degrees for most of the walk and we had a minuscule dusting of snow on the way back.
A really enjoyable walk on a good day.
Distance: 11.1 kms.
Time: 5'14"
Ascent: 785 metres

Trestle Mountain
For those who don't know, Trestle Mountain is part of Sleeping Beauty, the other section being Collins Bonnet. Collins Bonnet is the hair and head while Trestle Mountain is the bosom. The whole outline is best seen from around Huonville.
I was going to take a couple of walkers up to Trestle Mountain today but they could not make it for various reasons, so I decided to go on my own as I new it was going to be a good day weather wise.
I started from Myrtle Forest and then up the track beside the creek to the track junction and opted to take the track to Collins Bonnet. As I attained some altitude there were patches of remnant snow and when I reached the East West Trail it was somewhat thicker.

I walked down the East West Trail to the short cut at Glen Dhu Rivulet where I stopped for a snack. This is where I normally stop when coming this way as it is a pleasant spot with lots of rocks to sit on.

The short cut was quite wet and boggy and I managed to sink my boot at one spot. Quite soon I started the ascent of Trestle Mountain and took about 40" to reach the summit. There were patches of snow here and there. The views from the top were great as it was a clear day with high cloud.

After spending a little time here I headed back down the mountain to the East West Trail and walked via the Collins Cap Trail and Myrtle Forest Track back to the car. See previous post here for GPX file and info.

Trestle Mountain

Sunday 25th November 2012

Trestle Mountain from East West Trail
I had previously walked up Trestle Mountain from the end of Mountain River Road last year and enjoyed that walk so decided to try it from Myrtle Forest.
I started the walk at the Myrtle Forest car park and walked up the track to the junction for Collins Cap and Collins Bonnett. Instead of walking up to the Collins Cap trail I chose to walk up to the East West trail via the Collins Bonnet track. I knew that this would provide me with more up than the other way but I was fine about that.
Collins Cap from Collins Bonnet Track
It was a steady climb of about 600 metres in just over 3 kms. before I reached the East West trail and then it was downhill and on to the short cut at Glen Dhu Rivulet before encountering the East West trail again. Here I turned left and found the ascent track for Trestle Mountain. The track climbed steadily uphill over boulders before coming out at the summit. It had taken me 45" to climb up. The views were great at the top. The last time I had been it was in cloud and I could not see a thing.
From Collins Bonnet track
I spent about 15" here and climbed up on the boulders on the top to get a good view. I walked back down and back to the car via the Collins Cap trail. This was a very enjoyable walk with fantastic views.
Distance: 11.4 kms.
Time: 5'00"
Ascent: 912 metres
